Forest dept observes Chinar Day in Sgr | KNO

Srinagar, Mar 15 (KNO): The Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department, in collaboration with the J&K Forest Research Institute, celebrated Chinar Day with a series of environmental awareness activities at Chinar Bagh, Dal Gate on Friday. “Chief Conservator of Forests, Kashmir, Irfan Rasool Wani, was the chief guest at the event, which began with a ceremonial Chinar sapling plantation drive,” reads a statement issued a copy of which was accessed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). It reads, a heritage walk was organized to educate participants about the historical and cultural significance of the Chinar tree in Kashmir. The participants were also briefed on the tree's vital role in maintaining the region's ecosystem. Additionally, a cleanliness drive was held, with active participation from students, local residents, and representatives from various NGOs. The drive aimed to promote the importance of a clean and healthy environment for the protection of Chinar trees. “To safeguard Kashmir’s rich natural heritage, the J&K Forest Research Institute has geo-tagged around 28,500 Chinar trees across the Valley. Approximately 10,000 trees have been equipped with QR-based metal plates for digital monitoring and protection,” the statement reads with adding officials said the initiative aims to ensure better conservation and management of the iconic Chinar trees, which hold immense ecological and cultural value in Kashmir—(KNO)
